Ra Dreyfus is a producer, writer, director and photographer who has been involved with multiple productions on various scales. You can check some of her work at Art On Scene on Sunset Blvd. in West Hollywood with her exhibition “The Female Gaze, don’t grab me…I am not an object”.

Ra is working on her first animated comedy series ‘Jesse’ with ACME Animations Company and Director John Dilworth and has two pieces from her fine art exhibition ‘Demons’ that are currently featured in the Louvre in Paris.

Hi Ra, please tell us a little about you?

I’m director, writer, producer, fine art photographer and artist, but at the end of the day I’ve learned in life that any information offered without inquiry is defensive by nature.

Describe yourself in 3 words?

Esoteric, accepting, inquisitive

What got you started in the industry?

I can’t remember not being in the industry.

What has been the best moment of your career so far?

My recent art exhibition, “The Female Gaze, don’t grab me…I am not an object”, which is currently up at Art On Scene on Sunset Blvd in West Hollywood, CA. It attacks the objectification of women through sexuality. It ask society to eliminate the Madonna/Whore complex for women are far more diverse than just categories. It asks us to explore the idea that all women have the right to sexualize themselves without the objectification from any person due to the systematization of the government and the media.

How’s a typical day in your life?

My life is pretty chaotic and ever changing. I have learned to dance within the chaos.

Now tell us about “The Female Gaze” project?

Since the dawn of time women have been inhuman. We started as Goddesses who bled in time with the moon for 7 days & lived. We birthed humans, our wombs the literal universal creator.  Our power frightened the male species and so we went from being inhuman to being inhuman beings. Female sexuality was no longer perceived through the view of the feminine divine, but by the male objectification. The female gaze became irrelevant and women’s identities were dictated by men.  I want women to take back their power.

You can see my exhibit at Art On Scene, 8521 Sunset Blvd, West Hollywood, CA 90069. It will be open to viewing throughout the month of March.

Who is still on your bucket list to work with?

Bucket list is long and I’m sure there are people I don’t even know I want to work with that I want to work with.

Now tell us about the project “Jesse”?

Jesse is the animated comedy I created, directed by John Dilworth. It’s in the vein of South Park and is about Jesse ‘Jesus Christ’ living in modern day, and he is basically the ultimate 33 year old millennial.

Directing or Photography?

I love to create, so it doesn’t matter what medium that lives in.

Once the shoot is over, how many levels of approval must the image(s) go through before they are showcased in public?

I like my work to be collaborative. From conception to creation, I like to work with my subjects and artists. But it’s different every time. For no two people are the same and it’s my job to bring out whatever we may need from them and that is a delicate dance.

Do you have a preferred setup to work in terms of camera and lighting?

Honestly, the camera and lighting is dependent on what I am trying to create.

What kind of gear would we find in your bag?

In my bag you will find a Cannon 7D, various lenses, and osmo dji, glitter and candy wrappers.

What lenses you use the most?

Lenses always depend on the project. But recently, I directed a music video for Chino XL & Rama Duke of the remake of the red hot chili peppers song “Under the Bridge” released on March 6th and we used the KOWA anamorphic lenses from 1970 and it was orgasmic.

Do you prefer strobes or natural light?

Again depends on what I’m creating. Natural light and strobes both have their pros and cons – like life.

What is one thing that you regret in your career so far?

I don’t regret things. It’s pointless.

Can you take us though your workflow from shoot to post?

The workflow is never the same. But the similarities that run within it are collaboration with the artist, label, buyer, etc. I like to think of the process as “making a baby”. You and a group of people are coming together to make magic. The only way that gets done is trust, listening to others, and being open to what the project is rather than what you think you want it to be. You must be open to the process and allow is to be free while you control the elements around it. True art is a living breathing thing and you cannot contain it, you can only harness it.

What is your favorite post-production tip?

My favorite post production tip would have to be, it will always take longer than you think, just like construction. And have food for people – lots of food.

I’m an alien and a lover of unicorns.

Do you have any hobbies?

Hobbies… video games – particularly first shooter games. And also I collect onesies.

What do you think of the Social Media?

I think social media is yin and yang. There is so much that’s good about it, it provides connection and information. But i feel it is desensitizing people from life. It creates connection and eliminates it.
