Check our interview with professional car driver and pro race team owner Justin Peck.
Hi Justin, please tell us a little about you!
A little about myself… I am a professional off road race car driver and have been fortunate to to have been racing for over 20 years now. I am a business owner and have been since I was 20 years old. I have 4 wonderful children and one grandbaby that keeps me focused on my abilities to provide for my family and give them the life I never had.
Describe yourself in 3 words?
Risk taker, motivated, compassionate
Name one your strengths?
The ability to relate to others and their struggles. Not that I have experienced everything in life, but I have been down several paths in life and typically have the experience and knowledge to help others beat their issues.
We’re sure you have been asked this million times but how did you get into desert racing?
Ha! That’s been asked once or twice for sure. When I was a little kid, my dad would take me in the mountains on his dirt bike. I would sit on the gas tank and hold onto his legs as we burned through the canyons. I remember that feeling of loving the speed and loving my dad. As I got older, the love of speed and anything with a motor grew. When I was 17-18, I bought my first motorcycle and entered my first desert race a year later. The rest is history!!! I have tens of thousands of miles in the desert and about tens of thousands of laps on a track.
Best advice ever given?
Always be better than you were yesterday
Do you have a role model?
I actually don’t have any role models. I do have people that I look up to for their abilities to do certain things I can’t yet do, but I have always tried to be my own role model. Its very important to me that I am the Hero in my own story. Make sense?
What is the best part of racing?
The competition, winning, and be able to drive fast are all great things about racing, but the best part is the moment when I put on my helmet. The world is filled with chaos and my mind spins really fast trying to keep up with all the ventures I am part of. However, the second I put on my helmet, life stands still and my path is so very clear. It’s the only time that I feel 100% in control of my mind.
What kind of training do you do to keep fit?
Training and nutrition are a huge part of my life… I have a strict 5 day program that I adhere to in weight training and cardio and then I am very health conscious in my diet. (Which is why I created Gear49, a supplement company) Training not only helps with the physical part of my sport, but it also is a very important part of keeping my bi polar disorder in check and under control.
Besides racing do you practice or follow any other sport?
Ummm… What other sports are there? I watch and following anything racing and that’s about it. However, I am a softball/baseball dad. My daughter plays on her high school fast pitch team and my youngest boy plays little league.
Now tell us about your memoir “Bullet Proof”?
Oh geez… There is a lot to say I suppose, but I’ll keep it short. A few years ago I was processing my life and how I could make a difference in the life of my children. I wanted them to truly know who their dad was and how every experience I lived through had a positive effect on who I was. I realized that it didn’t matter how many stories I would tell them, there would always be those times they would forget, so I decided to write a life history so I could pass it down to the generations that follow. When I was about half way done, I sent it to a few friends and their feedback wasn’t what I expected. I was told that this would go far beyond just helping my kids and that if I wanted too, I could help bring awareness to mental illness, bring motivation to others, and basically show that if you don’t quit, you can accomplish anything you put your mind to. So, I jumped in with both feet and wrote about things I never thought I would talk about. Its been an amazing learning experience for me and has been quite hard, but I think at the end of the day, it will all be worth it.
Where and when we will be able to buy it?
I am not quite sure actually… You would have to talk to my PR team for exact dates
What is you favorite song? And why?
Favorite song… Are you sure this is for an article and not my Tinder profile. Ha!
Music is a huge part of my world and to pick out just one song is pretty tough. I listen to a wide variety of music and have a few favorites but not one that stands out above the rest.
Any future plans you want to share with us?
I want to create a legacy that my children and family would be proud of. I want to help as many people as I can conquer mental illness. I want a championship winning race team. Basically, I want my future to consist of smiles and a lot of happiness not only for me, but the people around me.
Name 3 things you can’t live without?
My race cars
How is a normal day in your life?
Well, define normal…. My days are always full of ten million tasks that I seem to only be able to complete half of them. I run 7 different corporation, so there is always something that needs attention. I wake up, grab my coffee, and turn on my laptop. Between emails and text messages, I usually spend at least an hour replying. I go to the gym and train after that and then start to put out all the business fires that seem to arise on a daily basis. Between my racing, kids and family, running my companies, and trying to take a small amount of “me” time, my days are pretty full.
How do you handle criticism?
I value other people and their opinions. One thing I have learned throughout my years is that you cant please everyone all the time and there are always people that disagree with my point of view. However, I have learned to be very tolerant and try to put myself in their shoes before I rush to judgement or hurt feelings. I take all criticism with a positive view and try to see how I can take other opinions to make my life better.
In 5 years you will be…?
Justin Peck… I don’t aspire to be anything else but myself. I hope that in 5 years I will be a better version of myself.
Idea of a perfect Sunday?
Perfect Sunday is spending it on the race track.
Where we can follow you?
Well, if you walk behind me, then you will be following me. Right?
